Washington Dental CE Requirements

Washington dentists must complete 63 hours of continuing education every three years, while dental hygienists must complete 15 hours each year (verified at annual renewal). Online/distance-learning courses that include an assessment have no hour cap for either license, so nearly all CE can be done online; hygienists are limited to 5 non-assessment self-study hours per year, and dentists earn only half credit for plain online self-study but full credit for interactive webinars and distance-learning courses. Washington does not use CE Broker — licensees attest at renewal and keep records for audit. NO CE Broker NOTE : Washington specifically states that self-study CE provided online or by mail receives 30 minutes credit for each 1 hour completed. The exception is live or recorded interactive webinars.

Licenses renew annually. Dentists/Hygienists verify 63/15 hours every 3 years on their renewal date (the triennial cycle). 100% online but 50% credit for DDS and 5 hours limit per yr for RDH.

Online CE in Washington: Washington treats online courses that include an assessment/quiz as "distance learning," which has NO hour cap for either license type. For dental hygienists, plain self-study without an assessment is capped at 5 hours per year, but distance-learning online courses that include a quiz can cover all 15 required hours. For dentists there is no explicit maximum on self-study, though plain online or correspondence self-study counts at half credit (30 minutes counted per hour completed), while live or recorded interactive webinars count at full credit — so up to 100% of CE can be completed online. Home Study Solutions online courses (which include a completion assessment) qualify as distance learning and can cover that portion of your requirement. (DDS ex: If they took 63 ce hours onlien they would only get credit for 31.5) They would have to take 126 hours to = 63 hours to renew.

  • Dentist: 1 hour — Current infection prevention standards (every 3 years)
  • Dentist are allowed to take 100% CE online but only 50% of each credit will be given. (Ex: 126 online CE hours = 63 CE credits)
  • Hygienists are allowed to take 100% Ce via online for 100% credit
  • Both: current BLS/CPR for healthcare providers card required
  • Self-study cap: hygienists limited to 5 self-study (non-assessment) hours per year; dentists have no cap but plain online/correspondence self-study counts at half credit — distance-learning courses with a quiz are uncapped for both
