Course Description:
The risk of suicide is much higher than the national average among health professionals. Increasing awareness and changing the perception of mental illness go hand in hand towards removing the negative connotations in today`s society. Gain knowledge of changes in behavior or moods that a health professional may display if struggling with their mental health. Understand the association between burnout syndrome, depression and suicidal ideation.
Course Objectives:
1. Understand the basic physiological response to stress.
2. List some of the most common issues which are stressors for dental professionals.
3. Describe both the beneficial and destructive coping mechanisms which dental professionals utilize to deal with stress.
4. Review the issues which involve Substance Use Disorder (SUD), Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Opioid Use Disorder(OUD) among health professionals.
5. Discuss concerns about the nature and consequences of Burnout Syndrome (BS).> 6. Understand the prevalence and consequences of mental health issues.
