Utah Dental CE Requirements

Utah requires both dentists and dental hygienists to complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years (biennial cycle), with licenses expiring May 31 of even-numbered years. A maximum of 15 of those 30 hours may be earned through internet or home study (self-study) when verified by an exam and certificate. Additional mandates include current CPR-BLS certification and, for controlled substance prescribers, 2 hours of controlled substance prescribing CE. Maximum 3 hours may be in practice management. Every 2 years (biennial)

Licenses renew biennially and expire May 31 of even-numbered years; the 30 hours must be earned during each two-year licensure period.

Online CE in Utah: Utah allows a maximum of 15 of the 30 required hours per two-year period to be completed via internet or home study (self-study), when verified by an examination and a certificate of completion — the remaining 15 hours must be earned through other qualifying formats. Home Study Solutions online courses can cover up to those 15 self-study hours.

Key Utah requirements & rules:

  • 2 hours — Controlled substance prescribing CE, required for licensees holding a controlled substance license/prescribing authority
  • Maximum 3 hours of Practice Management allowed
  • Sedation permit holders: 2 hours - Minimal Sedation, 4 hours - Moderate Sedation, 8 hours-Deep Sedation
  • Self-study cap: no more than 15 of the 30 hours may be internet/home study (verified by exam and certificate)
  • Current CPR-BLS certification required for renewal (ACLS or PALS may apply per sedation permit classification)
