Minnesota Dental CE Requirements

Renewing your Minnesota license soon? Don’t wait until the deadline — knock out your CE today.

Minnesota dentists must complete 50 hours of professional development (CE) and dental hygienists 25 hours each biennial (2-year) cycle, renewing by the last day of their birth month. At least 30 of the 50 dentist hours (15 of the 25 hygienist hours) must be clinical "fundamental" activities, with electives capped at 20 (dentist) / 10 (hygienist). Minnesota sets no separate online/self-study cap — structured online and webinar clinical courses count as fundamental with no limit — and an infection control course is mandatory each cycle.

Renewal
Every 2 years (biennial) renews month and year of birth dates whether born even or odd year

Renews biennially by the last day of the licensee's birth month, in the even- or odd-numbered year that matches the licensee's year of birth; the professional development cycle is the 24-month period ending on that date.

Online CE in Minnesota: Great for online learners: Minnesota does NOT set a separate self-study/online cap the way many states do. Structured online courses and webinars on clinical subjects count as "fundamental" activities with no cap, so Home Study Solutions online courses can cover the great majority of your requirement — potentially all 50 dentist / 25 hygienist hours if the courses qualify as clinical fundamental CE. The only limit is on "elective" activities (which include unstructured professional reading / self-study): a maximum of 20 elective hours for dentists and 10 for hygienists per cycle. Confirm any borderline self-study split with the board.

Key Minnesota requirements & rules:

  • Prescribing Controlled Substances — 2 hours (dentists only)between 2020-2023)
  • Infection control — a board-mandated infection control course is required each biennial cycle (no fixed hour count; must primarily address patient safety and health)
  • Fundamental minimum — at least 30 of 50 hours (dentists) / 15 of 25 hours (hygienists) must be clinical fundamental activities
  • Self-study / elective cap — no more than 20 elective hours (dentists) or 10 elective hours (hygienists), which is the bucket that includes professional reading / unstructured self-study; college courses capped at 5 hours each, 15 per cycle
