Massachusetts dentists must complete 40 CE hours (CEUs) and dental hygienists must complete 20 CE hours every 2 years (biennial); dentists renew by March 31 of even years and hygienists by March 31 of odd years. Up to half may be self-study: a maximum of 20 home study/online CEUs for dentists and 10 for hygienists per cycle, each requiring a passed test. Required topics include current CDC infection-control guidelines, CPR/AED or BLS certification, and opioid/safe-prescribing training for MCSR or DEA registrants.

Dentists renew by March 31 of even-numbered years; dental hygienists renew by March 31 of odd-numbered years (each covers the 24 months immediately preceding).

Online CE in Massachusetts: Massachusetts allows dentists a maximum of 20 self-study (home study, online, correspondence, audio or video) CEUs per 2-year cycle (out of 40), and dental hygienists a maximum of 10 self-study CEUs per cycle (out of 20); each self-study course must include a test the licensee passes. Home Study Solutions online courses can cover up to those self-study hours — 20 for dentists and 10 for hygienists.

Key Massachusetts requirements & rules:

  • Infection control — a course on current CDC Guidelines is required each renewal cycle
  • 3 - hours of Opioid / safe prescribing training — required for dentists who hold a MA Controlled Substance Registration or DEA registration (per M.G.L. c. 94C, § 18(e))
  • Self-study cap — dentists max 20 of 40 CEUs and hygienists max 10 of 20 CEUs may be earned by home study/online per cycle
  • CPR/AED or BLS — continuous certification required (ACLS/PALS if the licensee holds an anesthesia permit)
