Maryland Dental CE Requirements

Maryland dentists and dental hygienists must each complete 30 hours of Board-approved continuing education every 2 years (biennial cycle). Of the 30 hours, a maximum of 17 may be self-study (online/correspondence) and at least 13 must be earned in person or via live webinars. Mandatory topics include 3 hours of infection control each cycle, 2 hours of abuse and neglect every other cycle, and (for dentists) 2 hours on proper prescribing and disposal of prescription drugs. Renewal Period: May 1 through June 30 of the applicable year.Odd/Even Rule:Licenses ending in an odd number renew in odd-numbered years.Licenses ending in an even number renew in even-numbered years. DAs are not required to take CE. However, Dental Radiation Technologists: Must complete a 2-hour board-approved infection control course every two years for renewal. If inactive in practice for 600+ hours over six years, 8 hours of dental CE (including 4 hours in radiation safety) are required before renewal.

Online CE in Maryland: Maryland allows a maximum of 17 self-study (online/correspondence/home-study) hours per 2-year cycle, and at least 13 of the 30 hours must be completed in person or via live Board-approved webinars. Home Study Solutions online courses can cover up to those 17 self-study hours.

Key Maryland requirements & rules:

  • 3 hours — Infection Control (required every renewal cycle for renewals in 2025 and thereafter)
  • 2 hours — Abuse and Neglect (required every other renewal cycle)
  • 2 hours — Proper Prescribing and Disposal of Prescription Drugs (dentists only, counts toward the 30 hours)
  • 1 hour — Implicit Bias training (one-time, for first renewal on or after 4/1/2022)
