Maine Dental CE Requirements

Renewing your Maine license soon? Don’t wait until the deadline — knock out your CE today.

Maine dentists must complete 40 hours of board-approved CE per biennium and dental hygienists 30 hours per biennium, on a two-year cycle (dentists renew by December 31 of odd years, hygienists by December 31 of even years). All hours may be earned through distance learning, but distance-learning courses without an exit exam are limited to 10 hours (Category 2) with at least 30 hours as Category 1. Dentists who prescribe opioids need 3 of those hours on opioid prescribing, and current CPR certification is required at every renewal. There is no crfedit limit on online.

Online CE in Maine: Great for online learners: Maine allows all of your CE (40 hours for dentists, 30 hours for hygienists) to be completed by distance learning — but distance-learning courses taken WITHOUT an exit examination are capped at 10 hours (Category 2), and at least 30 hours must be Category 1. Home Study Solutions online courses include an exit exam, so they count as Category 1 and can cover your entire requirement.

Key Maine requirements & rules:

  • 3 hours — Opioid prescribing (required for licensees authorized to prescribe opioids)
  • 6 hours — Sedation/anesthesia topics (required for sedation permit holders)
  • Current CPR/BLS certification required prior to each renewal (up to 3 hours may count toward CE)
  • Self-study cap — all hours may be distance learning, but no more than 10 hours may be distance learning without an exit examination (Category 2); at least 30 hours must be Category 1
