Iowa dentists and dental hygienists each must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years (a biennial cycle running September 1 through August 31). Of that total, no more than 12 hours may be earned through self-study (online/home-study/correspondence) activities. Mandatory content includes 1 hour of infection control, 1 hour of Iowa jurisprudence, 1 hour on opioids for prescribing dentists, and child/dependent-adult abuse reporting training every 3 years.
Biennial cycle running September 1 through August 31 (the current period is Sept. 1, 2024 — Aug. 31, 2026); licenses renew by August 31.
