Indiana Dental CE Requirements

Renewing your Indiana license soon? Don’t wait until the deadline — knock out your CE today.

Indiana dentists must complete 20 hours of CE and dental hygienists 19 hours each biennial renewal cycle, with licenses expiring March 1 of even-numbered years. At least half of the hours must be live, which caps non-interactive self-study/home-study CE at about 10 hours for dentists and 9.5 hours for hygienists. Both must include a 2-hour course on ethics, professional responsibility, and Indiana statutes and rules; hygienists must also hold BLS certification.

Online CE in Indiana: Indiana requires at least half of all CE to be completed as live presentations or live workshops, so self-study/home-study (non-interactive online/correspondence) is capped at 50% — up to 10 hours for dentists and up to 9.5 hours for hygienists per biennium. Note: online courses count as "live" when they include real-time interaction between instructor and participant. Home Study Solutions online courses can cover up to those self-study hours.

Key Indiana requirements & rules:

  • 2 hours — Ethics, Professional Responsibility, and Indiana Statutes & Administrative Rules (both dentists and hygienists)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification — required for dental hygienists
  • 8 hours — Opioid prescribing CE for DEA-registered dentists (federal MATE Act; the separate Indiana opioid CE requirement sunsetted July 2025)
  • 5 hours — Anesthesia CE per period only for holders of general anesthesia/deep sedation or parenteral conscious sedation permits
  • Self-study cap: at least half of CE must be live, so no more than 10 self-study hours (dentists) or 9.5 self-study hours (hygienists) per biennium
