Idaho Dental CE Requirements

Renewing your Idaho license soon? Don’t wait until the deadline — knock out your CE today.

Idaho dentists and dental hygienists must each complete 30 continuing education credits per biennial (two-year) renewal period. Self-study/online CE is capped at 8 credits for dentists and 6 credits for hygienists, with the balance earned through live/interactive courses. Idaho does not use CE Broker; licensees keep their own records for random Board audits, and a previously mandatory opioid-prescribing CE is now only recommended. Every 2 years (biennial) on birth dates, even/odd years depends on birth year. ie: Born 1964, renews even year every 2 years.

Renewal
Every 2 years (biennial) on birth dates, even/odd years depends on birth year.

30 CE credits are reported over each biennial (two-year) renewal period; the Board is transitioning to biennial licensure effective August 1, 2026, and CE is accumulated on a January 1 – December 31 basis.

Online CE in Idaho: Idaho caps self-study (online/correspondence/home-study) at a maximum of 8 credits per biennial renewal period for dentists and 6 credits for dental hygienists, with the remaining hours earned through live/interactive CE. Home Study Solutions online courses can cover up to those 8 self-study hours for dentists (6 for hygienists). Note: Idaho recently simplified its CE rules under zero-based regulation, so confirm the exact current self-study split with the Board.

Key Idaho requirements & rules:

  • Current CPR/BLS certification — must be maintained by active licensees
  • Opioid prescribing & pain management CE — no longer mandatory but highly recommneded; recommended for DEA-registered prescribers
