Hawaii Dental CE Requirements

Renewing your Hawaii license soon? Don’t wait until the deadline — knock out your CE today.

Hawaii dentists must complete 32 hours of continuing education every two years (including 6 hours of ethics and BLS/CPR), while dental hygienists must complete 20 hours every two years (including 2 hours of ethics and BLS/CPR). The cycle is biennial, with licenses renewing by December 31 of odd-numbered years. Correspondence/self-study is capped at no more than half of the hours, but the board currently accepts 100% online/virtual CE, so online courses can cover essentially the entire didactic requirement.

Dentists
32 hours
Hygienists

Assistants
None required
Renewal
Every 2 years (biennial)

Biennial cycle; licenses renew by December 31 of odd-numbered years. New licensees are prorated (e.g., a hygienist licensed in the first year of the biennium owes 10 hours; second year owes 0).

Online CE in Hawaii: Hawaii limits correspondence/self-study courses to no more than half of the required hours (about 16 hours for dentists, 10 hours for hygienists). However, the board currently accepts 100% online/virtual CE from approved sponsors — the only exception is the hands-on skills portion of BLS/CPR, which must be done in person. So Home Study Solutions online courses can effectively cover your full didactic requirement. Because the 100% online/virtual allowance has been noted as applying per renewal period, confirm the current online split with the board before relying on it for the entire amount.

Key Hawaii requirements & rules:

  • 6 hours — Ethics for dentists (each 2-year renewal)
  • 2 hours — Ethics for dental hygienists (each 2-year renewal)
  • BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers (AHA or American Red Cross) — hands-on skills portion must be completed in person
  • ACLS required for dentists who administer general anesthesia or moderate sedation
  • Self-study cap: correspondence courses limited to no more than half of required hours, though 100% online/virtual CE is currently accepted

Courses that meet these Hawaii requirements

6 hours — Ethics for dentists (each 2-year renewal)

2 hours — Ethics for dental hygienists (each 2-year renewal)
