Colorado Dental CE Requirements

Colorado dentists and dental hygienists each must complete 30 hours of CE every 2 years (biennial), with licenses expiring February 28 of even-numbered years. At least 16 of the 30 hours must be clinical or science-based, and at least 50% (15 hours) must be live and interactive — so a maximum of 15 hours may be self-study/home study. Dentists also need 1 hour of Controlled Substance Use Prevention Training each period. The board does not use CE Broker; licensees keep their own records for 4 years and are subject to random audit.

Licenses expire February 28 of even-numbered years (February 29 in leap years) and may be renewed through April 30; first-time renewees licensed 12–24 months owe 15 hours, and those licensed 12 months or less owe none.

Key Colorado requirements & rules:

• 16 of the 30 hours — must be clinical or science-based
• At least 15 hours (50%) — must be live and interactive (web-based interactive courses may count)
• 1 hour — Controlled Substance Use Prevention Training (dentists/academic dentists; exemptions for non-prescribers or equivalent board certification)
• 2 hours — Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) current certification required for renewal
• Self-study / home-study is capped at 15 hours (up to 50% of the requirement); the remainder must be live and interactive
