Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to equip California dentists with the knowledge to prescribe Schedule II opioids safely, legally, and compassionately, aligning with state and federal requirements. California dentists authorized to prescribe or dispense controlled substances must register with the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) and complete a continuing education course on Schedule II opioid prescribing every two years. Additionally, all controlled substance prescriptions must be issued electronically, with some exceptions.
Course Objectives:
1. Define Schedule II opioid medications and their legal classification.
2. Identify the federal and state regulations related to prescribing Schedule II opioids.
3. Recognize signs of opioid misuse or abuse in patients.
4. Apply best practices for patient screening, documentation, and informed consent.
5. Educate patients about the risks, proper use, storage, and disposal of opioid medications.
6. Explore non-opioid alternatives and multimodal strategies for pain management.
