Dental Treatment of Geriatric Patients with Medical Issues

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course explores the unique challenges and considerations in providing dental care for elderly patients with complex medical conditions. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of age-related health changes, the impact of systemic diseases on dental treatment, and strategies for safely managing medically compromised geriatric patients. Topics covered include medication interactions, managing patients with cognitive impairments, oral manifestations of systemic diseases, and modifications in treatment planning. This course is designed for dental professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in geriatric care and improve their ability to treat aging populations with compassion and competence.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:       

Upon completion of this course focused upon the geriatric population participants should be able to:

 1. Understand the population demographics which reflect an aging population.

2. Review how the aging process can affect the metabolism, distribution and excretion of medications.

3. List some of the most common mental health conditions among the geriatric population and their impact upon oral health.

4. Discuss how the most common cardiovascular diseases and the medication used for their treatment can impact oral health and the provision of dental treatment.

5. Describe how the treatment for systemic malignancies impacts oral health and can influence the course of dental treatment.

6. Cite the most common orthopedic issues, their impact upon oral health and the influence they have upon oral hygiene.

7.  Review the influence which Type I and Type II Diabetes mellitus has upon oral health.

8. Review how chronic kidney disease can impact oral health and influence the provision of dental treatment.
