Michigan Dental Ethics And Jurisprudence

Course Description:
This Michigan-specific course reviews dental ethics, jurisprudence, recordkeeping, informed consent, professional responsibility, and ethical decision-making, with special emphasis on delegation of duties to UDAs, RDAs, and RDHs under Michigan law.

Course Objectives:

After completing this course, the participant should be able to:

1. Identify the five fundamental principles of dental ethics.
2. Differentiate ethical obligations from legal and regulatory responsibilities.
3. Explain the importance of informed consent and informed refusal.
4. Identify important components of a Michigan dental treatment record.
5. State Michigan's minimum dental record retention period.
6. Apply a systematic approach to resolving an ethical dilemma.
7. Define assignment, delegation, direct supervision, and general supervision under Michigan dental rules.
8. Explain the responsibilities of dentists when assigning or delegating duties to allied dental personnel.
9. Recognize that duties permitted for a UDA, RDA, and RDH may differ and may require different levels of supervision or additional training.
10. Apply Michigan ethics and delegation principles to common clinical situations.
