DEA Mandate

Course Description:

DEA Mandate 8 credit hours as required for DEA license renewal. The purpose of this course is to provide clinicians who prescribe or distribute opioids with an appreciation for the complexities of opioid prescribing and the dual risks of litigation due to inadequate pain control and drug diversion or misuse in order to provide the best possible patient care and to prevent a growing social problem. Prescribers must understand requirements for all controlled substances. This course will provide a general overview of federal and state-controlled substance regulations and the prescribing practices for controlled substances. Other areas of discussion include EPCS and PDMP, the roles of DEA, HHS and FDA and common substance use disorders.

Course Objectives:

1.  Learn how to comply with new DEA guidelines for prescribing controlled substances.
2.  Review current trends and the impact on society regarding opioid abuse.
3. Gain knowledge regarding the roles of DEA, FDA, and HHS.
4. Distinguish between the substance use disorder categories.
5. Summarize how the Controlled Substance Act was derived and the needs it meets.
6. Identify proper protocol for prescribing opioids for chronic pain.
7. Recognize signs and symptoms of drug abuse.
8. Learn how to recognize a drug impaired healthcare worker.
9. Be familiar with available diversion programs.
10. Gain knowledge into the EPCS and PDMPs programs.
