Autoimmune Diseases: Impact on Oral Health

Course Description:

The human body is exposed to bacterial, viral and fungal organisms any of which can be pathogenic. An intact immune system recognizes these organisms as antigens and can eradicate them before a microbial-induced state of disease can develop. This course discusses Sjogren`s Disease, Pemphigus Vulgaris, Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid, Type 1 Diabetes, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Expand your understanding of pathophysiology, medical treatment, impact on oral health and treatment considerations. 

Course Objectives:

1.Understand the basic etiology and pathophysiology of the autoimmune diseases.

 2. Review the autoimmune diseases which have direct involvement upon the health of the oral cavity.

3. Describe the impact of the autoimmune diseases which have an indirect effect upon the health of the oral cavity.

4. List the most common medications which are used in the treatment of these autoimmune diseases, their impact upon oral health and their potential to develop adverse drug reactions with medications which are used for dental treatment.

5. Discuss dental treatment modifications which may be required for patients with the autoimmune diseases highlighted in this course.
