Last-Minute CE: What to Do When Your License Expires This Month

If you have arrived here because your renewal is days away and your CE is not finished, start with the useful part: this is a solvable problem, and it is solvable today. Home study CE has no scheduled dates and no travel. The certificate is issued the moment you pass.

Here is the order to do things in.

1. Find out exactly what you are short of

Before buying anything, establish three numbers: total hours required, hours you have already completed, and which mandatory subjects are still outstanding. That third one matters more than the arithmetic. Being two hours short overall is a minor problem. Being short of a required infection control or jurisprudence course is a different problem, because nothing else substitutes for it.

2. Take the mandatory subjects first

If you run out of time, you want the shortfall to be in electives, which are interchangeable, rather than in a required subject, which is not. Buy and complete the compulsory courses before anything else.

3. Do not assume you must do it all in one night

Home study CE has no expiry pressure once purchased. Courses stay in your account, and you can stop and resume as often as you like. Splitting eight credits across three evenings is considerably better for retention than one long night, and the certificates arrive the same way either way.

4. Understand what “instant” actually means

Board reporting is fast too. Your certificate is valid proof either way, and you can submit it yourself if the timing is tight.

5. If you have already missed the date

Do not stop. Most boards have a grace period, a late fee, or a defined reinstatement path, and completing the outstanding CE is the first step of every one of them. What makes the situation materially worse is delay, not the original shortfall. Contact your board, find out what they require, and complete the hours while you wait to hear.
